Anglo American in talks with Sibanye to sell platinum mines

Otmane El Rhazi from The Bullion Desk.

Anglo American Platinum is in discussions with Sibanye Gold to sell its Rustenburg platinum mining operations, it said.

“The company is in discussions with Sibanye in relation to the sale of its Rustenburg operations, which may or may not lead to a transaction,” the world’s largest platinum producer, said in a statement.

Sibanye, South Africa’s largest gold procer and the world’s 10th largest, was formed when Gold Fields hived off three gold mines into a separately listed company in 2013. It is not interested in an acquistion of Amplats’ Union mine, which is also on the sales block.

Operations at Rustenburg were hit by a five-month strike last year that affected production. These operations produced 108,000 ounces of platinum in the second quarter of this year.
